Bananas: Good Mood Food

So you’re depressed. Maybe you’re just feeling ‘under the weather’.

The amino acid tryptophan helps your body make serotonin, a brain chemical that regulates mood. Low serotonin = low mood; high serotonin = well, it won’t make you ‘high’ but it will improve your mood. Human bodies need vitamin B6 to help convert tryptophan to serotonin. Bananas contain both tryptophan and vitamin B6 in large amounts.

So it’s very simple … just eat more bananas! πŸ™‚

Here’s a recipe for a quick and easy smoothie using bananas:

Strawberry Banana Kiwi Smoothie

You will need:

  • 1 cup organic vanilla yogurt
  • 1 organic banana (the older the sweeter)
  • 1 organic kiwi (very soft and ripe)
  • 7-8 organic strawberries
  • 1/4 cup organic 2% milk or almond milk
  • 1 tbsp organic raw honey (optional)
  • Ice (optional)
  • A blender

Directions:

  1. Wash your strawberries, place on paper towel to dry.
  2. Cut the end off the kiwi, and using a spoon, spoon out the fruit from the peel.
  3. Place in small bowl.
  4. In your blender, add about 1/4 cup ice (or however much you feel like adding…this is just for the chill factor).
  5. Peel the banana, cut it into about 6 pieces, and put it in the blender.
  6. Cut the tops off the strawberries, cut them in half over the blender (so if any juice drips, you’ve saved it), then add them to the blender.
  7. Cut the kiwi (over the bowl) into 4 pieces.
  8. Add kiwi and any juice from bowl into blender.
  9. Add the milk, then the honey and yogurt on top.
  10. Make sure to cover the blender (I’ve had my fair share of blender accidents..it isn’t pretty), and pulsate it for a second at a time, to break up the ice at the bottom.
  11. Once the ice is moving easier, set the blender to the ‘smoothie’ or ‘puree’ setting.
  12. Blend until it’s basically liquefied and it’s, well, the texture of a smoothie!

If it’s too thick, add a little milk. If it’s warm, add a little ice.

    An incredible dessert is frozen bananas and almond milk into a blender. You now have a great ice cream without all the fat and sugar and etc..
